CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier partners with Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation Program to further support mission of creating a healthy community

SHREVEPORT – CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier, announced last week that they will begin offering the Pritikin Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation (ICR) program to help fight cardiovascular disease, the number one killer in Louisiana. Pritikin ICRTM, a comprehensive lifestyle education program of diet, exercise, and promoting a healthy mind-set, will now be offered to cardiac patients who qualify. This will be the first ever ICR program to launch in the state.

“Launching this intensive cardiac rehabilitation program will build on our tradition of healthcare excellence and innovation by not only fostering a healthy community, but also giving our cardiovascular patients a comprehensive solution for treating their heart condition,” said Isaac Palmer, CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier’s Chief Executive Officer. “We are proud to introduce Pritikin ICR as it is based on the Pritikin lifestyle program whose effectiveness has been validated in more than 100 peer-reviewed studies and will play an important role in helping patients understand the impact healthy eating and exercise can have on their heart health.”

The Pritikin lifestyle program has been continuously taught at Pritikin Longevity Centers for more than 40 years. By partnering with Pritikin ICR, CHRISTUS Health Shreveport-Bossier will provide an enhanced cardiac rehabilitation program that focuses on a complete lifestyle change, offering the opportunity for improved health outcomes and reduced readmissions.

“Pritikin ICR is a comprehensive program that gives patients the tools to help them recover from a cardiovascular disease-related event such as a heart attack,” said Bob Franceschelli, President of St. Louis-based Pritikin ICR. “Medical procedures and medications prescribed by physicians must be coupled with a heart-healthy lifestyle. Through a comprehensive and engaging series of educational sessions, the Pritikin ICR program teaches patients how to sustain a heart-healthy eating plan, regular exercise, and the kind of mind-set that fosters healthy behaviors.”

The program offers the opportunity for improved health outcomes and reduced readmissions for those who suffered a cardiac event, Franceschelli said. The ICR program consists of 72 sessions, providing patients with substantially more education in healthy living than they receive in ordinary Cardiac Rehab(CR), which is 36 sessions primarily focused on exercise. The Pritikin ICR program incorporates the 36 CR sessions of exercise and adds 36 sessions of education.

The sessions, offer a mix of exercise, individual education and counseling, and group workshops facilitated by CHRISTUS personnel, including new features such as heart healthy cooking classes in onsite kitchen facilities and instruction on healthy food shopping and meal planning.

Launching the Pritikin ICR program further supports CHRISTUS’ commitment to providing high-quality care to the Shreveport-Bossier community.  For more information, contact Jordan Harris, marketing and PR coordinator for CHRISTUS Health at  (318) 681-6650 or (318) 572-0272.
