College baseball: BPCC sweeps Panola College, moves into tie for third in Region XIV

The Bossier Parish Community College Cavaliers swept Panola College 16-3 and 9-8 in 11 innings in a key Region XIV doubleheader Monday at BPCC.

BPCC improved to 29-12-1 overall and 18-10 in the conference. Panola dropped to 25-17 and 18-10.

San Jacinto College-North (30-14, 18-7) and Alvin College (25-17, 18-7) are tied for the conference lead in the overall standings on the Region XIV website. BPCC and Panola are tied for third.

BPCC and Panola are tied for first in the North Division that also includes Paris (30-13, 16-10. Navarro 18-23-1, 12-16), Angelina (23-23, 11-17), Tyler (25-17, 14-12) and Northeast Texas (5-19, 9-28).

Monday’s doubleheader was moved up a day because of weather concerns.

Dre Amaral scored the game-winner in the second game on Cole Antonelli’s single with one out.

Seth Grinberg and Mason Hammonds led off the bottom of the 11th with back-to-back walks.

Amaral, running for Grinberg, reached third on Kameron Edwards’ sacrifice bunt.

Hammonds went 2-for-3 with three RBI. He also drew two walks.

Cazorla, Cole Ketzner and Connor Crowson had two hits apiece. Ketzner, Carzola and Justin Breen all had doubles.

Garrett Lott, who pitched the final inning, got the win. He didn’t allow a hit and struck out two.

Lott was the seventh pitcher Cavaliers Head Coach Bobby Gilliam used in the game. Panola used five.

Breen ended the first game with a grand slam home run in the bottom of the sixth. He also hit a three-run shot in the second.

Ketzner went 2-for-4 with four RBI. Carzola, Crowson had Grinberg had two hits apiece. Edwards had two RBI.

Starter Seth Gurr allowed six hits and two runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Former Providence Classical Academy standout Cameron Duke allowed two hits in 1 1/3 innings.

On Monday, BPCC routed Dallas College-Mountain View in a non-conference game at home.

Gabriel Cabrera went 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBI.

Grinberg smacked two home runs and had four RBI. Antonelli went 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Crowson had two hits, including a double, and four RBI. Amaral also had two hits.

Breen had three RBI. Gavin Baird had a triple. Ketzner had a double.

Starter Miles Justin allowed two hits and struck out three in four innings.

BPCC is scheduled to return to action Friday with a 1 p.m. conference doubleheader against Angelina College in Lufkin, Texas.
