College softball: BPCC to host No. 9 Tyler JC Wednesday

The Bossier Parish Community College Lady Cavs host Tyler Junior College, ranked No. 9 in NJCAA Division I, on Wednesday in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Tyler is 33-12 overall and leads the Region XIV East Zone at 12-2. BPCC (30-8, 12-4) is tied with Kilgore College (24-16, 12-4) for second.

BPCC is coming off a pair of losses to Kilgore, 4-3 and 16-5, on Monday at BPCC. The Lady Cavs swept Paris JC 9-1 and 6-3 on Saturday at BPCC.

BPCC split a doubleheader at Tyler on March 11, losing the first game 9-3 and winning the second 13-4.

BPCC’s Elisa Favela, a freshman from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, ranks in the top five in six East Zone statistical categories — hitting (third, .455), RBI (fourth, 47), ERA (fourth, 2.41), wins (fourth, 13), home runs (first, 16) and strikeouts (fifth, 64).

Tyler pitcher Kelly Mardones ranks first in ERA (2.31), wins (20) and strikeouts (93). The Apaches’ Briana Paysinger is fourth in hitting (.440). Makenzie Goswick is tied for fourth in RBI with Favela.

BPCC’s Micah Gray, a sophomore from Whitehouse, Texas, ranks fifth in the East Zone in hitting (.429) and is tied for seventh in RBI (45). Kacey Maines, a sophomore from Carthage, Texas, is ninth in hitting (.407).

Chelsea Fagan, a freshman from Bastrop, ranks ninth in RBI (43) and seventh in home runs (10). Fagan has a .507 batting average (39 of 74), but to qualify for the leaders list a player must have a minimum of 2.5 plate appearances per game and have played in 75 percent of the team’s games.

Shelrika Bryant, a freshman from Bastrop, is batting .377 and has 30 RBI. She and Gray are tied for the team lead in doubles with 11. Bryant also ranks second on the team with 49 hits.

Pitcher Ashley Nipper, a sophomore from White Oak, Texas, ranks second on the team in wins with eight and has a 3.23 ERA.
