Former Airline star Raelin Chaffin pitched her first complete game shutout in LSU’s 5-0 victory over Central Connecticut State Sunday on the final day of the LSU Invitational at Tiger Park.

The freshman struck out a season-high 12. She allowed just three hits and two walks. The 12 strikeouts are a season-best among all pitchers on the staff this season.

“I could always be better, but today I had a great defense behind me who made amazing plays and a great coach calling pitches,” said Chaffin, who led Airline to the Class 5A state championship game last season.

Said LSU Head Coach Beth Torina: “I thought Raelin did a great job. She did everything we needed her to do. She obviously had her best start of the year, and one of the best starts we have had from a pitcher all year, honestly.”

LSU also defeated Louisiana Tech 8-0 in six innings Sunday. The Tigers (17-6) have won 12 of their last 13.

Chaffin improved to 2-0. It was her fourth appearance and third start.

Chaffin wasn’t the only former Airline star at Tiger Park.

Louisiana Tech sophomore Caroline Easom and Chaffin were teammates for three years at Airline.

Easom, a second baseman, got one of Tech’s three hits off LSU’s Shelby Wickersham.

Tech (15-8) went 4-2 in the tournament, which began Friday. The Lady Techsters swept Central Connecticut State, 3-2 and 8-0 in six innings, and Troy, 6-2 and 7-6. They lost to UL-Lafayette 8-0 and LSU.

Easom batted .438 (7-of-16) with seven RBI.

Raelin’s sister Mackenzie, a sophomore outfielder at Northwestern State, also had a productive weekend.

She had four hits in NSU’s four games in the Boerner Classic in Arlington, Texas.

The Lady Demons (12-8) split with Fordham, winning 6-1 and losing 5-3, and UTSA, winning 5-0 and losing 3-2.

Last Tuesday, Chaffin hit her first collegiate home run and went 2-for-3 in an 8-1 victory over Grambling State.

Chaffin is a former Benton and Airline standout.

The Chaffin sisters and Easom were teammates on the Bossier team that finished runner-up in the Little League Softball World Series in 2014.
