Annual High School Engineering Olympics involve local STEM professionals and foster interest in engineering fields
Sci-Port focuses on the “E” in STEM during National Engineering Week with the Annual High School Engineering Olympics from February 22-23 and public programming for Sci-Port visitors from February 24-28.
As part of Engineering Week, the High School Engineering Olympics at Sci-Port challenge high school students from the community to solve engineering problems ranging among robotics, structural, mechanical, aerodynamic and electrical. Challenges occur from 10-11:30 a.m.
Sci-Port’s Director of Education Alan Brown on the Engineering Olympics: “Our Engineering Olympics are different from most academic competitions. Many of the kids study hard and show up to every test and competition as well-prepared as possible. Here, they are presented with off-the-wall challenges for which they couldn’t possibly prepare for in advance. They are challenged to think on their feet and work quickly in a way that they don’t often need to.”
On Tuesday, February 23, participants from Byrd, Caddo Magnet, North Caddo, Bossier and Northwood high schools will be guided by professional engineers as they compete in their challenges. These professionals are volunteers from various STEM establishments from the community, including Benteler Steel/Tube, AEP/SWEPCO, Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana Tech and Bossier Parish Community College.
In addition to being mentors during the challenges, volunteers will also judge the students’ work at the conclusion of the competition. Many of the volunteer mentors also belong to the Louisiana Engineering Society – the only active engineering organization in the state of Louisiana and the sponsor for this year’s High School Engineering Olympics and other Engineering Week activities.
National Engineering Week will continue with public engineering programming for Sci-Port visitors from February 24-28. Visitors will also solve engineering challenges with only a mystery bag filled with various components and parts.
This year’s High School Engineering Olympics and other Engineering Week activities at Sci-Port have been made possible through the generous support of Louisiana Engineering Society.
