NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State junior point guard, a former Bossier High standout, and sophomore swingman Zeek Woodley are among 40 players around the country included on the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List announced Wednesday by CollegeInsider.com.
The Henson Award spotlights the top mid-major men’s college basketball player in the nation, said Angela Lento of CollegeInsider.com. The winner will be announced April 3 in Indianapolis during Final Four week at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet.
Northwestern State and Iona are the only schools to have two players on the watch list midway through the 2014-15 season. West and Woodley will lead the Demons Saturday afternoon in a home game against McNeese at 3 p.m. after a 1 p.m. women’s matchup opens the Southland Conference doubleheader in Prather Coliseum.
Woodley is third in the nation in scoring (22.4 per game) and West, who has led the country in assists most of the season, ranks fourth in Wednesday’s NCAA statistics at 7.4 per game.
Woodley is the country’s 24th most accurate shooter, making 57.3 percent of his shots from the floor. At 6-2, he is the shortest player in the top 25 and one of only five under 6-5 in the top 50.
West is also 27th nationally in steals with a 2.2 average and 47th in scoring at 18 points per game.
They each rank among career NCAA statistics leaders.
West is second among all active Division I players in career assist average (6.1), fourth in assist to turnover ratio (plus 2.54), fifth in steals average (2.38) and 18th in career free throw aim (85.6 percent).
Woodley is 10th on the career shooting percentage list at 59.7, and his 16.9 career scoring average in 48 games is 18th in the country among all active players. West’s career 15.4 scoring average is 38th.
