The turnout and support for Friday’s Fish Fry Fundraiser to help a couple of Bossier deputies and their families battling cancer was phenomenal, raising nearly $23,000!

The fish fry started before the 10 a.m. opening at the Viking Drive Substation as deputies and staff members were quickly filling the fish fry plate orders.  There were 1,246 pre-orders and 420 walk-in orders made throughout the busy morning and noontime hours, making a total of 1,666 fish plates made.  An additional $6,982 in monetary donations was contributed to the fundraiser.

While most of the food was donated, overhead was low, and nearly $23,000 was raised during today’s fundraiser, money that will be presented to the Parker and Grooms families.

Deputy Robert Parker is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiation for cancer. Angela Grooms, wife of Deputy Shawn Grooms, is battling cancer for the third time and will travel to Houston next week for a further treatment plan.

“The way this community showed support like this to our deputies and their families is remarkable,” said Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington.  “The turnout was beyond our expectations, but it goes to show just how much this community cares.

“We will now be able to provide a nice financial blessing to these deputies,” Sheriff Whittington said.  “Their journey with cancer continues after this fundraiser, and I encourage folks to remember them in their thoughts and prayers.  It is so uplifting and makes a tremendous difference.”

Folks came from all over the entire northwest Louisiana community to support the fundraiser – residents, businesses, organizations, government agencies, schools, military, various law enforcement agencies, fire departments, hospitals, and more.

Additionally, Plain Dealing School also raised $400 for the fundraiser through their “Jean Day” promotion today.
