Girls basketball: Airline, Haughton, Plain Dealing open district play with wins; Bossier rallies past Ouachita

The Airline Lady Vikings, Haughton Lady Bucs and Plain Dealing Lady Lions opened district play with victories Tuesday night.

In District 1-5A, Airline downed Byrd 43-34 at Byrd and Haughton edged Evangel 63-61 at Haughton. In District 1-1A, Plain Dealing defeated Homer 40-33 at Homer.

In a non-district game, Bossier rallied past Ouachita 57-53 at Bossier.

At Byrd, Tyra Kidd and Makayla Bendaw led Airline (6-8) with 10 and nine points, respectively. Camilla Rodriguez added seven.

The Lady Vikings got off to a fast start and led 18-6 at the half. The Lady Jackets rallied slightly in the third quarter but Airline was still up by nine going into the fourth.

At Haughton, Inez Green had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds in Haughton’s victory over the Lady Eagles.

Cassandra Simmons added 14 points, including two 3-pointers. Mayghan Myers added eight and Bethany Knotts seven. Morgan Buxton and Keanna Barber scored six each.

The game was close all the way. Haughton trailed 38-35 at the half but rallied in the third and took a one-point lead into the fourth.

The Lady Bucs (3-6) withstood a 33-point performance by Evangel’s Tiara Young.

At Bossier, the Lady Kats trailed 38-32 going into the fourth quarter. Ouachita was still up by five late but Bossier rallied in the final minutes.

Tia Walker scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, including a bucket inside to give Bossier (10-3) its first lead of the second half. Walker scored 18 of her team-high 22 points in the second half.

Essence Phlegm scored only five points, but she hit a big 3-pointer to give Bossier a 54-52 lead in the final minute.

Necka Wynn added 12 points and Destiny Thomas had nine. Nae Johnson scored four points in the decisive fourth quarter.

Brandi Washington led Ouachita (9-3) with 13 points.

At Homer, Dranautika Thomas led a balanced Plain Dealing squad with 13 points. Hershey Stumon added 11 and Darmesha Noble 10 for the Lady Lions (7-3).
