The Benton Lady Tigers remained undefeated in the Bossier Parish middle school girls basketball seventh-grade district Thursday, but they got a big scare from the Cope Lady Cougars.
Cope rallied from a large deficit and sent the game into overtime. But Benton controlled the extra period and won 41-35.
Benton is 6-0 with four games to play. The Haughton Lady Bucs remained a game back with a 21-11 victory over Elm Grove.
The Benton eighth-grade team improved to 5-1 with a 43-24 victory over Cope. In another eighth -grade game, Elm Grove downed 26-21 to improve to 4-2.
The Greenacres-Rusheon games were postponed because of a Greenacres’ coach’s illness, Rusheon coach Cedric Washington said. Greenacres leads the eighth-grade district at 5-0.
At Cope, Te’Quaza Chambers scored 22 points, including the only six either team scored in overtime, to help the Benton seventh-graders pull out the victory.
Mar’Kayla Clark and Claire Ambrose scored eight points each. Coach Mary Jo Duddy said Emily Cox and Madi Simms played tough defense and were strong rebounders. Ashanti Gavin and Alisa Harris came off the bench and contributed to the win with their play in overtime.
Keiarra McCoy keyed Cope’s effort with 14 points. Haley Richardson added 10.
Emily Ward scored 17 points for the victorious Lady Tigers eighth-grade team. Duddy said Ward played well in all aspects of the game.
Morgan Bradford and Abbie Wynn combined for 15 points with many of those coming off offensive rebounds. The defensive play of Georgia Carroway and Savannah Powell was another key to the victory, Duddy said. Abby Colvin and Karmeisha Bradley handled the ball with confidence and played tough defense off the bench.
Erica Loeak topped the Lady Cougars with 10 points. Ta’mayah McMillon scored five.
At Haughton, Takaiyah Sweeney scored 10 points and Taylor Brokenberry added six to lead the Lady Bucs seventh-grade squad to the win.
Elm Grove’s Lexi Cox and Jasmine Ford combined for seven points.
Mandy Grunewald paced the victorious Lady Eagles eighth-grade team with 13 points. Maecy Ingram chipped in with five.
There are no games next week during the Thanksgiving holidays. District play resumes a week from Monday.
