Girls basketball: Four parish teams post district victories

Tuesday was a pretty good night for Bossier Parish girls high school basketball teams as four took home district victories.

In District 1-5A, Airline downed Byrd 61-54 at Airline and Haughton defeated Captain Shreve 54-33 at Haughton. In District 1-3A, Bossier crushed Booker T. Washington 50-39 at home. In District 1-A, Plain Dealing knocked off Grambling 51-41 on the road.

In District 1-4A, the Benton Lady Tigers gave all the had before falling to Minden in a 55-54 thriller at Benton.

At Airline, the Lady Vikings let a nine-point lead slip away against Byrd and then rallied late for the victory.

Byrd took a 52-50 lead with 56 seconds left. Airline’s Kei McCoy hit two free throws to tie it. The Lady Vikings then forced a couple of turnovers in the backcourt and ended the game on an 11-2 run.

McCoy scored 15 of her game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter. After hitting the two free throws to tie the game, she extended the streak to nine before finally missing. McCoy was 10 of 12 from the line in the quarter.

Tyra Kidd had a couple of big baskets inside in the final minute. Madison Rowland hit two big 3-pointers in the second quarter, including one at the buzzer that gave Airline a 29-24 lead at the half.

The Lady Vikings improved to 15-4 overall and 2-0 in 1-5A. Byrd dropped to 8-15 and 1-1.

At Haughton, the Lady Bucs kept pace with the Lady Vikings in the district with the win over Shreve.

Ebone’ Green and Chelcy Swint led Haughton (14-4, 2-0) with 13 points each. Lomia Watkins added eight, and Inez Green seven. Shreve dropped to 0-2 in district.

At Bossier, Shamichael Johnson tossed in 13 points to help the Lady Kats knock off BTW. Alysha Crismond added 10 and Bree West nine as Bossier improved to 9-13 overall and 1-1 in 1-3A. The Lady Kats have won three of their last four.

At Benton, the Lady Tigers erased a six-point halftime deficit by outscoring Minden 20-8 in the third quarter, but the Lady Tiders pulled out the win in the fourth.

Benton’s Gabby Jackson scored 11 of her game-high 16 points in the second half. Brandy Harris scored 15 points. Benton dropped to 6-14 overall and 0-2 in 1-4A. Minden improved to 12-8 with its fourth straight win and 2-0 in district.

At Grambling, Plain Dealing improved to 10-6 overall and 2-0 in 1-1A with the victory over Grambling.
