Girls basketball: Plain Dealing falls in second round of 1A playoffs

The Plain Dealing Lady Lions couldn’t overcome a slow start against No. 2 seed Vermilion Catholic in the second round of the Class 1A girls basketball playoffs Thursday night, falling to the Lady Eagles 57-36 in Plain Dealing.

The Lady Lions’ loss brought an end to the girls basketball season in Bossier Parish. Plain Dealing, the District 1-1A runner-up and No. 15 seed, finished 17-9. Vermilion Catholic improved to 23-4.

Plain Dealing couldn’t buy a bucket in the game’s first four minutes and the visitors from Abbeville raced to a 10-0 lead. After that, the Lady Lions played the Lady Eagles virtually even through the second and third quarters.

Vermilion Catholic led 26-16 at the half and 40-28 after three quarters. The Lady Eagles took advantage of some good defensive play to pull away in the fourth.

Three Lady Lions scored eight points — Dra Briggs, Dranautika Thomas and Teaunna Perry. Darmesha Noble and Demaria Perry scored five each.

Ashailee Brailey and Lexi Langlinais led Vermilion Catholic with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Kaylen Collins added 14.
