Girls soccer: Parkway closes outstanding season with semifinal loss to defending champs


The Parkway Lady Panthers’ outstanding season ended with a 3-0 loss to three-time defending state champion Ben Franklin in the Division II girls soccer semifinals Friday afternoon in New Orleans.

Parkway, the No. 3 seed, finished 26-6-1. Second-seeded Ben Franklin (20-1-1) faces district rival and No. 4 seed Lakeshore, which defeated St. Thomas More in a 3-2 penalty kicks shootout after the teams finished regulation and overtime tied at 1.

Parkway remained within striking distance of Ben Franklin for most of the game.

The Lady Falcons scored the only goal of the first half on a free kick with about nine minutes left.

It remained 1-0 for the first 27 minutes of the second half when Franklin scored again. The Lady Falcons got their final goal on a header with eight minutes left.

The game marked the final one for five Parkway seniors — Alex Mitchell, Baylee Spencer, Madison Mitchell, Miranda Scotten and Sara Funderburk.

They helped the Lady Panthers win 54 games over the last three seasons. The Lady Panthers won the District 1, Division II championship this season. Parkway was runner-up in District 1, Division I in 2014 and 2015.
