Spring Break is becoming a week of growth and learning for local teens and young adults as the Haughton Library launches its first-ever “Adulting 101” workshop series.

The five-day program, running March 9–13, invites young people to spend their school break gaining practical, real-world skills while enjoying free lunch each day. Organizers say the series is designed to help teens build confidence and independence as they prepare for life after high school.

Day one kicked off today with the workshop “Money Skills: How Not to Go Broke.” Financial professionals guided participants through budgeting basics, smart spending habits and saving strategies aimed at helping young adults make informed financial decisions early in life.

Additional sessions scheduled throughout the week include:

Tuesday — “Your First Tax Form Made Easy”
A step-by-step walkthrough explaining how to file taxes, understand paycheck deductions and avoid common mistakes.

Wednesday — “Handling Your Own Healthcare”
Experts will discuss health insurance basics, scheduling doctor visits and managing personal medical information.

Thursday — “Don’t Poison Yourself: Food Safety”
Specialists will teach proper food handling, storage practices and ways to prevent foodborne illnesses at home.

Friday — “Your Mind Matters”
The final session focuses on mental health awareness, stress management and recognizing when to seek professional help.

Guest speakers representing several regional organizations are leading the workshops, including United Way of Northwest Louisiana, LSU Health Shreveport, LSU AgCenter and Minden Medical Center of Haughton.

By combining free meals, interactive instruction and expert-led sessions, Adulting 101 is turning time off from school into an opportunity for personal development.

Organizers say they hope strong participation this week will make the program a recurring Spring Break offering for the Haughton community.
