High school baseball: Airline, Benton earn series splits against 1-5A parish opponents


The Airline Vikings and Benton Tigers earned splits of their District 1-5A series against parish opponents Saturday.

Airline broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Haughton 4-3 at Haughton. Benton scored 10 runs in the second inning en route to a 19-6 victory over Parkway at Benton.

In the other 1-5A games, Captain Shreve defeated Byrd 7-2 for a split of their series at Byrd’s field at LSUS, and Natchitoches Central completed a sweep of Southwood 10-0 at Southwood.

Airline (11-8, 4-1) leads the district. Haughton (17-4, 4-2), Benton (12-9-2, 4-2) and Parkway (11-11, 4-2) are tied for second. They are followed by Natchitoches Central (13-9, 3-3), Captain Shreve (9-14, 2-4), Byrd (11-10, 2-4) and Southwood (5-17, 0-5).

At Airline, Tristan Hargrave led off the bottom of the seventh and was hit by a pitch. He stole second with one out. 

Harrison Waxley was intentionally walked with two outs. Mason Morgan’s single scored Hargrave with the game-winner.

The Bucs had their chances, leaving runners stranded at second and third in the sixth and failing to capitalize on a Nick Hensley leadoff double in the seventh.

Airline took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI-single by Waxley.

Haughton scored two in the third. Hensley hit a home run with one out. After Colin Rains singled, two Bucs were hit by pitches. Rains then scored on a passed ball.

The Bucs had four hits. Hensley finished 2-for-3.

Roman Tolbert took the loss despite allowing just one hit and striking out four in 2 1/3 innings. Starter Caleb Brown allowed five hits and no earned runs in 4 1/3 inning.

Morgan and Brandon led Airline with two hits each.

Carter White got the win. He allowed one hit, struck out five and walked two in three innings of relief. Starter Caleb Hemmings allowed three hits in four innings.

Airline visits Natchitoches Central Tuesday at 6 in the opening game of their series. Haughton hosts Captain Shreve in their series opener.

At Benton, the Tigers had 10 hits in their 10-run second inning.

Hudson Brignac and Griffen Sibley had RBI-doubles. Cole Weir had a two-RBI single. Kenner Lauterbach, Bryson Pierce and Cale Latimer had RBI-singles.

Ten Tigers had hits in the game.

Lauterbach and Latimer finished with three each. Latimer drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to five the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Pierce had a double in the fourth.

Preston Hill went four innings for the victory. 

Parkway’s Shawn Driggers went 2-for-2 with a double. Trenton Lape went 2-for-3 with a triple Cade Josting went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Benton begins a two-game series at Byrd on Tuesday at 6. Parkway visits Southwood in their series opener.
