High school baseball: Airline, Benton, Parkway, Haughton pick up wins in tournaments

The Airline Vikings, Benton Tigers, Parkway Panthers and Haughton Bucs won tournament games Friday.

The Vikings defeated Lake Charles Sam Houston 10-3 in the Sulphur tournament for their first win of the season.

Benton went 1-1 in a New Orleans area tournament. The Tigers routed Chalmette 16-1 and fell to New Orleans Archbishop Rummel 4-3.

Parkway defeated Ouachita Christian 20-12 in the North DeSoto tournament.

Haughton went 1-1 in the Sulphur tournament, defeating Tioga 9-3 and falling to Neville 5-0.

Hunter Nycum had two doubles and five RBI in Airline’s victory. Louisiana Tech signee Cameron Parikh, the MVP on the All-Parish team last season, went 2-for-4 with a double. Jonathan Brandon had an RBI double. Josh James drove in two runs.

Jake Mayfield got the win. He went six innings, allowing seven hits and striking out three.

The Vikings got off to a fast start, scoring five in the first and three in the second.

Airline (1-1) is scheduled to play Sulphur at 10 a.m. and defending Class 5A state champion and perennial power Lake Charles Barbe at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Cody Norris went 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and seven RBI in Benton’s victory over Chalmette.

Garrett Hable and Legend Denler had two hits and two RBI each. Cole Horton went 2-for-3.

Turner Toms scattered six hits in five innings and struck out eight to get the win.

Rummel jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Benton scored three in the third. Neither team scored the rest of the way.

Horton had two of the Tigers’ six hits. Peyton Long had two RBI. Colby Sharp had a solid outing on the mound. He went five innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs with seven strikeouts.

Benton (3-1) is scheduled to play Riverside Academy, a Class 2A semifinalist last season, at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Sam Herren, Jonathan Plant, Jathon Patton, Cameron Townsend and CJ McWilliams all had two hits in Haughton’s victory over Tioga, a Class 4A quarterfinalist last season. Townsend and McWilliams both had doubles.

Pitcher Austin Clemmens had a double and three RBI. He pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.

Brennan Bockhaus had a double in the loss to Neville. The Bucs (2-2) are scheduled to conclude the tournament Saturday with a 10 a.m. game against West Monroe.

Parkway pounded out 17 hits in the victory over Ouachita Christian. Eric Brown went 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and three RBI.

Bryan Day went 3-for-5 with two RBI and scored five runs. Amani Larry also had three hits.

Eric Williams had two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Clayton Webb went 2-for-4 with a home run. Matthew McKee had a double and three RBI. Derious Bradford had two hits, including a double.

Parkway (2-1) faces Northwood at 9 a.m. Saturday in its final tournament game.
