High school baseball: Airline, Benton, Parkway notch 1-5A victories

The Airline Vikings, Benton Tigers and Parkway Panthers opened District 1-5A series with victories Tuesday.

Airline defeated Natchitoches Central 8-1 at Airline, Benton dropped Byrd 5-2 at Byrd’s field at LSUS and Parkway routed Southwood 12-0 in five innings at Southwood.

In the other 1-5A game, Haughton fell to Captain Shreve 11-1 in six innings at Haughton.

Airline (12-8, 5-1) continues to lead the district. The Vikings are scheduled to host Southwood (5-18, 0-6) in a makeup game at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Benton (13-9-2, 5-2) and Parkway (12-11, 5-2) are tied for second. They are followed by Haughton (17-5, 4-3), Captain Shreve (10-14, 3-4), Natchitoches Central (14-11, 3-4), Byrd (11-11, 2-5) and Southwood.

At Airline, Carter White allowed just three hits and no earned runs in six innings. 

Harrison Waxley went 3-for-4 with a triple, double and two RBI.

Clayton Brandon went 2-for-3. Mason Morgan went 2-for-4 with two RBI. 

Carson Carey went 2-for-4. Caleb Hemmings had a double.

The series is set to conclude Thursday at 6 at Airline.

At LSUS, Hudson Brignac went 3-for-3. Bryson Pierce had an RBI-triple. Josh Sanchez had an RBI-double. Cole Weir drove in the Tigers’ first run.

Sawyer Simmons allowed just two hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The teams are scheduled to complete the series at 6 Thursday at Benton.

At Southwood, Zachary Clute went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI.

Barrett Newman went 2-for-2 with a double. Shawn Driggers had a double. Tanner Kirkland had two RBI.

The Panthers scored eight runs on five hits in the top of the third. Clute’s home run provided the final three runs.

The series is scheduled to conclude at 6 Thursday at Parkway.

At Haughton, Colin Rains’ double was the only hit for the Bucs,

Blake Fant pitched all six innings for Shreve. He struck out four and walked three.

The Gators had 11 hits.

The teams are scheduled to complete the series at 6 Thursday at Haughton.
