High school baseball: (Updated) Airline, Benton close regular season with wins

The Airline Vikings and Benton Tigers closed the baseball regular season with non-district victories Saturday.

Airline defeated Claiborne Christian with a 12-5 at Airline, and Benton downed New Diana, Texas, 13-4 at Benton in a makeup game.

Airline improved to 14-19, and Benton raised its record to 22-2.

Both teams are going to the playoffs.

At Airline, Hunter Hollis, Bryson Connell, Chris Hayes and Will Tynes had two hits apiece for the Vikings. Connell doubled and drove in two runs. Hollis also had a double. Hayes had two RBI.

Brayden Thompson, who didn’t allow a hit and struck out four in two innings of relief, got the win.

Airline trailed 5-0 after 4 1/2 innings and then put eight on the board in the bottom of the fifth.

At Benton, Cody Norris went 2-for-3 with a double. J.T. Brice also had two hits.

Cole Horton and Clint Lasiter both had three-RBI doubles. Brennan Blaylock drove in two runs.

Turner Toms scattered seven hits and struck out four in 5 2/3 innings.
