High school baseball: Airline falls to West Monroe; District 1-5A play set to begin

The West Monroe Rebels scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Airline Vikings 4-3 in a non-district game Monday at West Monroe.

Airline has lost three consecutive games when leading or tied going into the final inning. The Vikings lost to Tioga 3-2 in eight innings and Neville 6-5 in the Sulphur tournament Saturday.

Hunter Hollis went 2-for-3 with a double. Jonathan Brandon had two hits and two RBI.

The Vikings got another strong pitching performance. Jake Mayfield allowed just five hits in 6 1/3 innings and walked only two.

Three-time defending champion Airline (10-8) begins District 1-5A play Tuesday at Captain Shreve (6-13).

In other 1-5A openers, Parkway (10-6) faces Byrd (6-12) at Byrd’s field at LSUS, and Haughton (7-12) is at Evangel Christian (8-11).

In District 1-4A, four-time defending champion Benton (16-6, 5-0) visits Huntington.
