High school baseball: Airline’s Mulrenin pitches 1-hitter in win over Welsh

Anthony Mulrenin pitched a one-hitter as the Airline Vikings rolled past Welsh 11-0 in the Sulphur tournament Thursday night.

Three other Bossier Parish teams lost close games in tournament play.

Parkway fell to Dutchtown 2-1 in the Sulphur tournament. Benton lost to Ruston 6-5 and Haughton dropped a 2-0 decision to Ouachita Parish in the West Monroe tournament.

Mulrenin struck out seven and walked only one to earn his first victory of the season. The game went six innings because of the 10-run rule.

Jonathan Brandon went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Cameron Parikh and Hunter Nycum both went 2-for-3 with doubles. Peyton Jordan had a double and two RBI. Jake Mayfield had two RBI.

Airline led 3-0 after five innings and then broke the game open with eight runs in the top of the sixth.

Brandon and Parikh both had a single and double in the inning. Nycum also had a double. Josh James, Mayfield and Hunter Hollis had singles.

Airline (10-4) continues play in the tournament Friday against Tioga.

Caleb Reese went 2-for-3 with a double in Parkway’s loss. Eric Williams had two hits and an RBI.

The Panthers outhit the Griffins 6-4. Dutchtown broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth thanks to two walks, a bunt and a sacrifice fly.

Parkway starter George Booras allowed three hits in five innings.

The Panthers (9-4) continue play in the tournament Friday against West Ouachita.

In the West Monroe tournament, Benton led Ruston 4-2 after four innings. But the Bearcats got within one in the fifth, scored two in the sixth and added one in the seventh. The Tigers scored one in the bottom of the seventh.

Benton’s Cody Norris went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Coleman Nerren went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Hal Gatti went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Starter Will Hine allowed seven hits and struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings.

Benton (14-5), which had an eight-game winning streak snapped, continues play in the tournament Friday against Ouachita Parish.

Haughton got a solid performance from starter Nick Heckman in its loss to Ouachita. Heckman allowed five hits, struck out six and walked none in five innings.

Mason Simmons had two of the Bucs’ five hits.

Haughton (7-9) continues play in the tournament Friday against West Monroe.
