In the teams’ first District 1-4A game Thursday at Benton, the Benton Tigers needed an extra inning to defeat the North Desoto Griffins.
The Tigers quickly took all the suspense out of the second and final 1-4A game between the two Friday evening at North DeSoto, scoring seven runs in the first inning en route to a 12-2, five-inning victory.
Benton, which won 4-3 Thursday, improved to 22-6 overall and 9-0 in 1-4A. The four-time defending champion Tigers have won 25 straight district games. Their last loss was to North DeSoto 3-0 on April 7, 2015.
North DeSoto dropped to 19-8 and 6-2.
Benton sent 13 batters to the plate in the first inning. Cole Horton had two singles. Garrett Hable, Sam Simmons and Connor Jack Smith had one apiece.
Cody Norris and Coleman Nerren had RBIs in the inning. The Tigers took advantage of four walks and a hit batter.
Benton had five consecutive hits with two outs in a three-run second inning. Simmons started with a double. Kade Scott, Smith, Norris and Horton followed with singles.
Horton went 4-for-4 on the day. Scott went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Simmons went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Norris also went 2-for-3.
Smith and Hable both went 2-for-4. Hal Gatti had a double.
The Tigers finished with 16 hits.
Will Hine had another outstanding performance on the mound. He pitched a two-hitter and struck out eight with just two walks.
North DeSoto’s Drake Foster, who hit three home runs in the first game, smacked a two-run homer in the third.
Benton, which was No. 3 in the latest Class 4A power rankings, resumes district play at Minden on Thursday.
