High school baseball: Benton grabs share of 1-5A title


The Benton Tigers earned a share of the District 1-5A championship with a 7-4 victory over the Natchitoches Central Chiefs on Thursday at Benton.

Benton improved to 19-11-2 overall and finished district play at 10-4. The Tigers avenged a 3-1 loss to the Chiefs (17-16, 4-10) in the first game of the series Tuesday.

Benton, Haughton and Parkway finished tied for first. It’s the Tigers’ ninth straight district title but the first under first-year head coach Dane Peavy.

Per Natchitoches Central’s stats on GameChanger, Benton pitchers Bryson Pierce and Preston Hill limited the Chiefs to four hits.

Hill didn’t allow a hit in 1 2/3 innings of relief and struck out two.

Pierce also went 3-for-3 with three doubles and two RBI.

Cole Weir had two hits, including an RBI-double in the bottom of the fourth that put the Tigers on top 4-3.

Benton broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the inning. Kenner Lauterbach had an RBI-double and Hudson Brignac had an RBI-single.

The Tigers are scheduled to close the regular season against Doyline at 1 p.m. Saturday at home.

According to GeauxPreps.com, Benton was No. 20 in the Class 5A power ratings before Thursday’s game. The top 32 teams in the final ratings make the playoffs with the top 16 hosting first-round games.

First-round pairings will be announced Sunday.
