The Benton Tigers completed the first week of the season 4-0 with a 13-6 victory over St. Mary’s Saturday in the Many tournament.
Elsewhere, Airline played two of the state’s top Class 5A programs back to back in the Sulphur tournament. The Vikings fell to defending non-select Division I state champion Sam Houston 10-1 and multiple state champion Barbe 3-1.
Parkway came close to getting its first victory but the Panthers came up just short against Loyola 5-4 at Loyola.
At the Many tournament, Case Jorden went 3-for-4 with a triple. Cole Snell went 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBI. Brody Turnipseed had a double and two RBI. Harrison Miller had a double.
The Tigers used five pitchers. Starter Lucas Cox allowed two hits and struck out three in two innings.
At the Sulphur tournament, Jack Henry Smith had two of Airline’s four hits against Sam Houston. Errors hurt the Vikings.
Pitchers Ayden Hawn and Sam Fisher helped keep Airline (2-3) in the game against Barbe. Hawn started and went 3 1/3 innings. H allowed three hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and three walks. Fisher didn’t allow a hit or run in 2 2/3 innings with one strikeout and three walks.
Andrew Sawrie had a double.
At Loyola, Parkway (0-5) led 4-3 going into the bottom of the fifth. Loyola tied it with a run in the fifth then broke the tie with one in the sixth.
Parkway had two hits and drew seven walks. Jax Thomson and Brady Prine both walked twice.
Starter Noah Lyle went 4 2/3 innings. He allowed six hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts and two walks. Brylan Washington didn’t allow a hit and walked one in the seventh.
