High school baseball: Benton opens District 1-4A play with sweep


The Benton Tigers picked up where they left off last season in District 1-4A on Tuesday, sweeping the Fair Park Indians 17-0 and 18-0 in district openers at Benton.

Benton (5-2) is aiming for its fifth straight district championship.

Kade Bailey, Drew Haynes, Brandon Seymore and Andrew McPherson combined on a no-hitter in Game 1. Each pitched one inning.

Nine Tigers got hits. Cody Norris had a grand slam home run, double and four RBI.

Keagan Rogers went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Garrett Hable had a double and two RBI. Conner Smith had a triple. Hal Gatti had a double.

The second game went just three innings. Sixteen Tigers had at least one at-bat. Cole Horton had two hits and four RBI. Sam Simmons pitched one inning and had two RBI. Scott had two hits, including a double, and two RBI.

Gatti doubled and drove in two runs. Smith also had a double. Rogers and Carson Barnette pitched one no-hit inning each.

Benton faces St. Charles Catholic on Thursday at St. Frederick in the Monroe-area Trey Altick Classic.

Elsewhere, the Haughton Buccaneers dropped a 3-2 decision to Sterlington at Sterlington. Haughton pitchers Austin Clemmens, Jayson Nitz and Cameron Townsend limited the Panthers to just five hits, but the Bucs managed only four.

Nick Heckman had an RBI double. Haughton (2-4) plays East St. John at Ruston in the Trey Altick tournament Thursday.
