High school baseball: Great day for parish 1-5A teams


Bossier Parish District 1-5A baseball teams swept league opponents Saturday afternoon.

Airline rolled past Southwood 9-1 at Airline, Haughton edged Byrd 4-3 at Haughton and Parkway dropped Captain Shreve 12-7 at Parkway.

Airline (18-10, 7-0) leads the district. Haughton (13-16, 5-2) is second followed by Byrd (12-15, 6-3), Parkway (15-11, 4-3), Captain Shreve (10-18, 3-4), Evangel Christian (10-17, 2-6) and Southwood (5-12, 0-7).

At Airline, Ryan Lawhorne allowed just one hit in six innings. He struck out five and walked only one.

Jonathan Brandon hit an inside-the-park home run. He also tripled and had two RBI. Josh James went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jake Mayfield had an RBI-double. Lannon Broadway had two RBI.

The Vikings scored four runs in the first inning. Cameron Parikh and James had singles in the inning. Brandon’s home run made it 3-0. Bryson Connell’s sacrifice fly scored the final run.

Airline will try to complete the district sweep Tuesday at Southwood.

At Haughton, the Bucs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the win. It was Haughton’s 12th one-run game of the season. The Bucs have now won four.

Mason Simmons led off the seventh with a walk. Hunter Harlan, running for Simmons, advanced to second on Sam Herren’s single.

Byrd got the first out of the inning on a fielder’s choice to third base. Herren advanced to second on the fielder’s choice and third on Jonathan Plant’s sacrifice fly to center field.

With two outs, Jathon Patton singled home Herren. Kobe Jackson, who had reached on the fielder’s choice, advanced to third. Cameron Townsend walked to load the bases.

Cade Thompson walked, tying the game at 3. The Bucs got the victory when pitcher Austin Clemmens was hit by a pitch.

Clemmens pitched a two-hitter. He struck out five and walked three.

Patton went 3-for-4. Jackson had two hits, including a double. Plant went 2-for-4.

Jackson’s double came in the sixth inning. He scored on a wild pitch to cut Byrd’s lead to 2-1.

Byrd’s Xavier Moore hit a home run.

The Bucs will try to complete the district sweep Tuesday at Byrd’s field at LSUS.

At Parkway, the Panthers overcame a 7-0 deficit with four runs in the fourth and eight in the fifth.

The Panthers had five hits in the fifth. Peyton Lewis’ double scored the first run and Bryan Day followed with a two-run homer over the left-field fence, giving Parkway an 8-7 lead.

Jordan Wilson, Eric Brown and Caleb Reese singled. Brown’s hit scored one run and Reese’s scored two. The Panthers scored the final run of the inning on an error.

Eric Williams and Derious Bradford led off the fourth with back-to-back home runs. Lewis and Day followed with singles. Wilson’s one-out single cut Byrd’s lead to 7-4.

Day went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Reese went 2-for-3. Lewis and Wilson both went 2-for-4.

Landon Kirkland, who allowed three hits and one earned run in 3 2/3 innings of relief, got the win. Lewis pitched two innings in relief of Kirkland and allowed one hit and no runs.

Harrison Lawrence and Reid DuBois had two hits each for Shreve.

The Panthers will go for the district sweep Tuesday at Captain Shreve.

On Friday, the Bossier Bearkats picked up another District 1-4A victory over Huntington, 11-2, at Rusheon.

Xavier Murphy and Kaleb Harlow combined to throw a no-hitter. Murphy, Harlow, Kevin Bonapart and Kaleb Ortega all had two hits. Murphy had a triple, and Ortega had four RBI.

Bossier improved to 9-15 overall and 2-6 in district.
