High school baseball: Haughton completes sweep of Evangel

The Haughton Buccaneers completed a three-game sweep of the Evangel Christian Academy Eagles with a 5-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Haughton.

The Bucs, who open District 1-5A play at defending champion Benton (7-7-2) on Tuesday, improved to 13-2.

Elsewhere, Parkway, Benton and Airline all suffered losses on the final day of tournaments.

The Panthers fell to defending 5A state champ and undefeated Barbe 13-6 in the Barbe tournament.

The Tigers lost to Sam Houston 5-0, and the Vikings fell to Dutchtown 4-2 in the Sulphur tournament.

At Haughton, the Bucs took a 5-1 lead with four runs in the bottom of the third and then held off an Evangel rally.

Colin Rains went 2-for-4 and had two stolen bases. Roman Tolbert had a double.

Rains’ two-run double in the third gave Haughton a 3-1 lead. Parker Lowrie led off with a single and Joshua Sewell walked.

Austin Anderson brought Rains home with a single and later scored on a wild pitch with two outs.

Zach Ross earned his first career win in relief of Gary Rondeau, who struck out three in three innings. 

Parkway fell behind Barbe 8-0 after the Bucs scored six in the bottom of the third. But the Panthers rallied within three with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Barbe (19-0) shut the door with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Trenton Lape went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Zach Schoenborn hit a two-run home run and walked twice. 

Parkway (7-9) opens District 1-5A play Tuesday at home against Byrd (9-4).

Airline’s Clayton Brandon went 2-for-3 against Dutchtown. Carson Carey had two RBI.

Harrison Waxley allowed just three hits and no walks in six innings.

Airline (6-7) visits Southwood (2-11) on Tuesday in its district opener.
