The Haughton Buccaneers and Parkway Panthers defeated parish opponents in the opening games of District 1-5A series Thursday.
Haughton downed Airline 14-8 at Haughton, and Parkway edged Benton 6-5 at Parkway.
In another 1-5A game, Byrd got past Captain Shreve 4-3 at Shreve.
At Haughton, the Bucs trailed 7-5 going into the bottom of the fourth then scored seven to take the lead for good.
Haughton’s Brogan Walker allowed just one run in four innings of relief. He gave up four hits and walked none.
Haughton’s Connor Blank went 2-for-2 with three RBI. Joshua Sewell went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Chan Lytle also went 2-for-3. Colin Rains had a double.
Airline’s Clayton Brandon went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Caleb Hemmings went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Keegan Lehr and Mason Morgan both went 2-for-4.
Haughton improved to 17-3 overall and 4-1 in district. Airline dropped to 9-8 and 3-1. The two-game series is scheduled to conclude at 1 p.m. Saturday at Airline.
At Parkway, the Panthers broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Zach Schoenborn doubled with one out, scoring Tanner Kirkland, who reached on an error.
Carter Wells, running for Schoenborn, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Cade Josting’s single.
Benton scored a run in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded with two outs. But Tyler Bouillion induced a flyout to end the game.
Parkway’s Barrett Newman went 2-for-3. Zachary Clute had an RBI.
Starter Josting went 6 1/3 innings. He struck out eight, allowed five hits and walked three.
Benton scored four runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Gavin Jacobs brought home a run with a sacrifice fly and Cole Weir had an RBI-single. Cade Stewart stole home. Brady Blaylock led off the inning with a single.
Parkway tied it in the bottom of the inning. Ashton Martin walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Clute. Clute advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a passed ball.
Parkway improved to 11-10 and 4-1. Benton dropped to 11-9-2 and 3-2. The series is set to conclude at 1 Saturday at Benton.
