Former Benton standout Jordan Shaffer has been named head baseball coach at Providence Classical Academy.
PCA just completed its first academic year of competition as a member of the LHSAA. The baseball team played a junior varsity schedule.
Also, former Benton Head Coach JD Stephens has been named Director of Baseball Operations and will also serve as an assistant coach.
Jack “Bump” Skaggs, who served as the school’s 5th/6th-grade and high school coach this year, will return as an assistant.
Shaffer, a member of the Class of 2014, was a three-sport athlete at Benton as well as valedictorian.
He was named All-State in baseball and All-Parish in football at quarterback.
Shaffer played college baseball at Northwestern State and Louisiana Tech.
For the last three years, he has been an assistant baseball coach at Cedar Creek. He also served time as defensive coordinator on the football staff
Shaffer also coached at Benton and Parkway. He is a graduate of Louisiana Tech, with a bachelor’s degree in biology.
Stephens was head coach at Benton for eight full seasons starting in 2013. The Tigers won district championships every season and the 2018 Class 4A state title. His record was 235-87, including the 2020 season cut short by COVID-19.
Before that, he spent eight seasons at Captain Shreve as an assistant to Ronnie Coker, helping the Gators win the 2006 Class 4A championship.
He has spent the last few years serving at Captain Shreve High School in the Special Education department.
Stephens is a 2001 graduate of Haughton. A four-year baseball letterman, he earned All-District, All-Parish and All-City honors.
Skaggs is a 1999 graduate of Airline. He was a two-time All-City and All-State player while also making the Academic All-State squad. He was Airline’s Scholarship Athlete of the Year in 1999.
Skaggs went on to UL-Monroe where he was a four-year letterman. He excelled on and off the field and was named to the 2003 Southland Conference All-Academic team.
