High school baseball: Stovall homers in fourth straight game as Haughton wins fourth straight; Benton improves to 5-1

Haughton junior Peyton Stovall homered in his fourth straight game and the Bucs won their fourth in a row, defeating defending Class 3A state champ Sterlington 8-4 Tuesday at Haughton.

Elsewhere Tuesday, Benton defeated New Diana, Texas, 16-5 on the road and Airline fell to Ruston 5-2 at Airline.

At Haughton, Stovall went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Matthew Whitten had a double.

Jacob Hernandez pitched a complete game, scattering six hits.

The Bucs (4-1) took advantage of several Panthers mistakes, including consecutive hit batters, to score five runs in the fourth.

The loss was Sterlington’s first after four straight wins to open the season.

At New Diana, Benton (5-1) pounded out 16 hits.

Cade Scott went 3-for-3 with a triple, double and four RBI. Clint Lasiter went 3-for-4.

Tanner Timms went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Grayson Gates had two hits, including a double, and two RBI.

Brennan Blaylock also had two hits and two RBI. Jack Walters went 2-for-3. Cade Paddy had two RBI.

Gates got the win, allowing five hits and three earned runs in 5 2/3 innings.

At Airline, Ruston limited the Vikings (2-2) to four hits. Bryson Connell had a triple.
