High school basketball: State All-Star games set for Saturday at BPCC

The Louisiana High School Coaches’ Association/Louisiana High School Basketball Coaches’ Association Boys and Girls All-Star Games will be held Saturday at BPCC.

The girls game tips off at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the boys game at 3. The games are for seniors only. Admission is $10.

Bossier guard Tyrese English is the lone player from a Bossier Parish school on a roster. He is on the boys West squad along with Woodlawn’s Telvin Thomas.

English was a key player on Bossier’s 2015-16 state championship team. The guard had a solid senior season, helping Bossier post a 28-6 regular-season record. Thomas averaged 18 points for a team that reached the Class 4A semifinals.

The West roster also features LSU signee Brandon Rachal of Natchitoches Central. The Chiefs won two state championships and finished runner-up once in the 6-foot-4 guard’s four years as a starter.

Natchitoches Central lost to eventual state champion Landry Walker 55-47 in the Class 5A quarterfinals last season.

Other players of note on the West squad include guard Lashard Powell of Class C state champion Atlanta and Jordan Foster, a 6-foot-9 Lamar signee from Comeaux.

The East squad features 7-foot Mitchell Robinson of Class 5A semfinalist Chalmette, a Western Kentucky signee, and 6-9 Joseph Thompson of Class 5A runner-up Bonnabel, a South Alabama signee.

Two members of Class 2A state champion Madison Prep are on the West roster — guard Josh Anderson, a Western Kentucky signee, and Jamel Robinson.

Guard Cedric Russell, a guard from Class 3A state champ Peabody, is a ULL signee. Wossman guard C.J. Jones signed with Northwestern State.

There are two players from Shreveport schools on the West girls squad — Southwood’s Jailyan Brown and Evangel Christian’s Breonna Frierson.

Evangel’s Meoka Young is the head coach. Byrd’s Toni Martinez is one of the assistant coaches.

Guard Cara Ursin of Class 5A state champion Destrehan is on the East roster. But the three-time Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year and Baylor signee may not be able to play because of an illness.

The East features 5-11 ULM signee Whitney Goins of Class B runner-up Anacoco, McNeese State signee Koko Daniels of Class 5A runner-up Barbe, Alexandra Saucier of Class 3A state champion South Beauregard, Skyler Goodwin of Division II state champion Parkview Baptist, 6-2 Kansas signee Micaela Wilson of Class 2A runner-up Rayville, and Western Kentucky signee Sherry Porter of Class 2A state champion Madison Prep.

Among the other East players who have signed with colleges are New Iberia’s Morgan Carrier (Southeastern), Edna Karr’s Destiny Collins (Nicholls State), Ville Platte’s Tyreona Doucet (ULL) and Jewel Sumner’s Diamond Brooks (ULM)

East guard Kaila Anderson of Division 2 runner-up University Lab and forward Krystal Freeman of Pineville are both Tulane signees.
