Bossier Parish Schools Release and Staff Reports
Plain Dealing has hired Deanthony Lyons as its head boys basketball coach, the school announced Thursday in a Bossier Parish Schools press release.
Lyons replaces Eddie Hamilton, who left after one season and is now the head coach at Evangel Christian Academy.
Lyons, the grandson of former Grambling Lab (now Lincoln Prep) Hall of Fame coach Michael Lyons, was an assistant girls coach at Acadia. He helped the Lady Hornets win the 2023 non-select Division IV state championship and finish runner-up in 2024.
“I’m incredibly honored to join Plain Dealing High School,” Lyons said in the press release.. “This community has a rich tradition of pride and potential. I’m committed to building a basketball program that stands on discipline, teamwork, accountability, and hard work.
“I want our student-athletes to grow not just as players, but as young men prepared for life beyond the court.”
Principal Jason Edwards expressed enthusiasm about the new leadership in the basketball program.
“Coach Lyons was selected through a careful and competitive process, and he stood out as a transformational leader,” he said. “His experience, integrity, and student-centered approach make him an ideal fit for Plain Dealing.
“We are excited to welcome him to our school community and confident that he will elevate the program both athletically and academically.”
Said Plain Dealing Athletic Director Jerry Byrd: “Coach Lyons brings the structure, energy, and vision we need to take our basketball program to the next level. He understands the importance of balancing athletic success with academic and personal growth.
“I’m looking forward to working with him as we continue to raise the standard for all of our athletic programs.”
Lyons began his professional journey serving in the United States Army as an Automated Logistical Specialist. After completing his service, he transitioned to education, teaching mathematics at both Union Elementary in Farmerville and Arcadia High School.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from American Military University and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of North Texas.
Lyons will begin working with his new team this summer. He will face some competition f the same challenges Byrd faces as the new head football coach.
He is taking over a program that went winless last season with a roster that included a small number of players.
Plain Dealing girls head coach Robby Lockwood said he will serve as an assistant to Lyons and Lyons will do the same for him.
