High school boys basketball: Haughton, Parkway, Bossier notch district victories

The Haughton Bucs, Parkway Panthers and Bossier Bearkats won district games Tuesday night.

In District 1-5A, Haughton edged Airline 56-54 at Haughton and Parkway routed Byrd 68-43 at Parkway.

In the other 1-5A games, Benton fell to Natchitoches Central 62-34 in Natchitoches and Huntington defeated Captain Shreve 63-56 at Shreve.

Natchitoches Central (18-4, 4-0) leads the district. Captain Shreve (15-8, 3-1), Haughton (14-9, 2-1), Parkway (13-10, 2-1) and Evangel Christian (11-11, 2-1) are tied for second in the loss column.

In District 1-4A, Bossier rolled past Southwood 72-29 at Bossier.

In the other 1-4A games, Minden routed Loyola 68-33, Northwood thumped Woodlawn 66-34 and Booker T. Washington hammered North DeSoto 67-27.

Bossier (10-11, 2-0), Minden (16-2, 2-0) and Northwood (8-16, 2-0) are tied for the lead.

At Haughton, a 6-0 run gave the Bucs a 55-48 lead late in the fourth quarter. 

Airline (9-13, 1-3) hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 55-51. After the Bucs missed two free throws, Airline’s Eli Washington was fouled attempting a 3-pointer. He made all three to get the Vikings within 55-54 with 21.6 seconds left.

Jayden Carey made one of two free throws to put the Bucs up by two with 9.6 seconds left.

After a timeout with 5.6 seconds left, Haughton’s Jordan Walton deflected the inbounds pass, got possession and dribbled down the court as time ran out.

The Bucs withstood a 3-point barrage by the Vikings. Airline made 17 field goals. Eleven of those were from behind the arc.

Eli Washington hit four in the first quarter, helping the Vikings take a 17-12 lead. Airline led 24-18 late in the quarter but Haughton got within 29-26 at the half.

The Bucs started the second half with a 10-2 run and led 36-31. They led by as many as eight in the third quarter, but the Vikings cut the lead to 44-42 going into the fourth.

Josh Ross, who made four 3-pointers, led Haughton with 20 points. He hit three 3s and scored 15 in the second half. Walton scored six of his 16 in the third quarter. Carey had 14 points.

Washington finished with 27 points and six 3-pointers, including two in the fourth. Isaiah Cunningham scored all 12 of his points from 3-point range. Joshua White added eight points.

At Bossier, Kerel Dean led the Bearkats with 20 points. Kam Davenport scored 11. Tonio Ambler-Barr and Jatravion Bunnery had nine each.

Bossier led 25-18 at the half. Dean poured in 16 points in the third quarter as the Bearkats outscored the Cowboys 30-7. 

Southwood dropped to 6-13 and 1-1.

At Parkway, the Panthers led 25-22 at the half then pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 21-9.

Byrd dropped to 5-17 and 0-4.

At Natchitoches Central, Benton fell to 7-12 and 0-3.
