High school boys basketball: Parkway, Haughton notch 1-5A wins

The Parkway Panthers and Haughton Buccaneers won District 1-5A games Friday night.

Parkway rallied past Byrd 55-52 at Parkway and Haughton downed Benton 66-57 at Benton for its first district victory.

In another 1-5A game, Airline fell to second-place Captain Shreve 72-57 at Airline.

The other 1-5A game between district leader Natchitoches Central (26-2, 11-0) and third-place Southwood (19-11, 8-3) was postponed because of bats in the Natchitoches Central gym.

Natchitoches Central could have clinched a share of the title with a victory.

In District 1-1A, Plain Dealing lost to Calvary Baptist 77-46 at home.

At Parkway, Bryce Roberts led nine Panthers who scored with 17 points.

Parkway led 27-25 at the half, but the Yellow Jackets outscored the Panthers 16-6 in the third and led 41-33.

Christian Roberts hit two 3-pointers and Zion Beaver one to spark the Panthers’ fourth-quarter rally. 

Jalun Reed, Bryce Roberts, Quincy Jones and Gabe Larry also contributed to the comeback as Parkway scored 22 points in the quarter and held Byrd to 11.

With two games left in the regular season, Parkway (18-10, 7-5) is No. 20 in the 5A power rankings, according to louisianasportsline.com. The top 32 teams in the final rankings make the playoffs with the top 16 hosting first-round games.

Byrd dropped to 12-13 overall and 2-10 in district.

At Airline, the Vikings led the Gators 24-23 at the half. But Shreve got hot in the third quarter and outscored Airline 27-14 to take control.

Devin Bilbo and Kyle McConathy led the Vikings (16-13, 5-7) with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Kendrick Crawford and Star Hampton scored 10 each.

With two games left in the regular season, Airline is No. 22 in the 5A rankings.

John Mitchell and Kendal Coleman led Shreve (22-7, 10-2) with 17 points each.

At Benton, Haughton improved to 6-20 and 1-11. Benton dropped to 11-18 and 3-9.

At Plain Dealing, Darrien Perry and Cedarius Johnson led the Lions (10-14, 4-5) with 10 points each. 

Plain Dealing is No. 16 in the 1A power rankings.
