High school football: Airline’s Darby makes LSWA Class 5A All-State first team for second straight year

Airline senior Kenny Darby has been named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 5A All-State first team for the second year in a row.

Last year, Darby was selected at wide receiver. This year he made the team at return specialist.

A Kentucky school signee, Darby returned three kickoffs for touchdowns, including one of 99 yards against Byrd. He averaged 70.4 yards on five returns.

Darby caught 93 passes for 1.200 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also rushed for 609 yards on 49 carries and scored nine TDs.

Non-select Division I quarterfinalist Parkway had four honorable mention selections — junior wide receiver Gary Burney, senior offensive lineman Chris Green, senior wide receiver Antonio Gladney and junior defensive end Rod Johnson.

Three Airline players received honorable mention — senior defensive back Jeremiah Epps, senior linebacker Braylyn Jackson and senior offensive lineman JD Yates.

Haughton junior running back Brandon Craig, Haughton junior receiver Ethan Johnson and Benton junior linebacker Xavier Villamor were also honorable mention selections.

Evangel Christian junior quarterback Peyton Houston was named Outstanding Offensive Player. Lineman Richard Anderson of select Division I champion Edna Carr was named Outstanding Defensive Player.

Benjy Lewis of non-select Division I champion Ouachita Parish was named Coach of the Year.

Byrd senior placekicker Ashton Murray and Evangel senior linebacker Damari Drake were the only other players from District 1-5A to make the first team.
