High school football: District 1-5A champ Evangel goes for Division I state championship Friday night; non-select semifinals also on tap

District 1-5A champion Evangel Christian Academy will be trying to win its 14th state championship Friday night in New Orleans.

The Eagles (11-2) face Scotlandville Magnet (12-0) in the Division I championship game at 8:30 in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

In other select championship games, Ascension Episcopal (13-0) plays Southern Lab (11-1) at 10 a.m. in Division IV, Riverside Academy (11-1) takes on St. Charles (11-2) at 1:30 p.m. in Division III and Parkview Baptist (8-4) plays St. Thomas More (9-3) at 5 in Division II.

Evangel last won the state championship in 2010. The Eagles defeated John Curtis 28-14 in the Class 2A championship game.

In 2013, the LHSAA split into select divisions and non-select classes for the football playoffs only. Private and magnet schools are in the select divisions and public schools are in the non-select classes. This school year, the split has been expanded to boys and girls basketball, softball and baseball.

Evangel outscored six District 1-5A foes 303-15. The Eagles have won 10 straight since losing to Allen, Texas, 45-10 and Neville 35-16 to start the season. Allen is currently 13-0. Neville is also 13-0 and in the semifinals of the Class 4A playoffs.

Evangel, the No. 5 seed, opened the playoffs with a 59-9 victory over No. 12 Holy Cross. The Eagles then edged No. 4 St. Paul’s 31-28 before knocking off No. 1 and previously undefeated John Curtis 27-6 in the semifinals.

The non-select semifinal games in all five classes are also Friday night.

In Class 5A, No. 5 Landry-Walker visits No. 1 Destrehan and No. 11 Zachary is at No. 2 West Monroe. Landry-Walker defeated Parkway 61-21 last week in the quarterfinals. Zachary is the defending state champion.

In Class 4A, No. 13 Warren-Easton is at No. 1 Neville and No. 3 McDonogh 35 visits Edna Karr. Karr defeated Benton 59-13 last week. Neville is the defending state champion.

In Class 3A, No. 1 West Feliciana hosts No. 4 Lutcher and No. 7 Amite is at No. 3 Kaplan.

In Class 2A, No. 1 Many hosts No. 4 Sterlington and No. 6 St. Helena College and Career Academy visits No. 2 Madison Prep.

In Class 1A, No. 5 Oak Grove is at No. 1 Haynesville and No. 2 Logansport hosts No. 3 Kentwood. Oak Grove defeated Plain Dealing 46-20 last week.
