Like the Parkway Panthers and Haughton Buccaneers before them, the Airline Vikings hung with the Evangel Christian Academy Eagles for a while Friday.
But in the end, the Eagles were too much in a 39-10 District 1-5A victory at Rodney Duron Field.
Airline dropped to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in district. Evangel, the three-time defending champion, improved to 3-3 and 3-0 with its third straight victory.
After Evangel opened the scoring on a run by Tamauge Sloan, Brian Marshall returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Jackson Tinkis’ PAT tied it at 7.
The Vikings defense kept the Eagles out of the end zone the rest of the first quarter and continued to play well into the second. A promising Airline drive stalled at the Evangel 5 and Tinkis kicked a 23-yard field goal to put his team on top 10-7 with 6:47 left in the half.
The game then swung in Evangel’s favor for good as the Eagles scored two TDs in 1:04. A long run by Sloan set up an 11-yard TD pass from Blake Shapen to Jiren Rattler. The Vikings then lost a fumble at their 21 and the Eagles capitalized with a TD pass from Horatio Ruffins to Rattler.
Another Airline fumble early in the third quarter set up another Evangel touchdown pass. Sloan scored on a 22-yard run to make it 32-10 late in the third quarter.
Airline plays its final non-district game Thursday at home against Class 3A North Webster. The Knights (3-3) lost to Logansport 34-14 Friday night.
