High school football: Three parish teams advance to second round of playoffs


Three Bossier Parish teams advanced to the second round of the LHSAA state football playoffs with victories Friday night.

In Class 5A, the No. 4 seed Parkway Panthers routed No. 29 Captain Shreve 60-21 at Preston Crownover Stadium. In Class 4A, the No. 10 seed Benton Tigers rolled past No. 23 Ellender 63-28 at Tiger Stadium. In Class 1A, No. 13 Plain Dealing crushed No. 20 South Cameron 44-14 in Plain Dealing.

Two parish Class 5A teams — the Airline Vikings and Haughton Buccaneers — had their season come to an end on the road. Airline, the No. 21 seed, fell to No. 12 Sulphur 45-35 and No. 24 Haughton lost to No. 10 John Ehret 48-27 in New Orleans.

Airline, which had 28-17 lead, closed its season 6-5. Haughton finished 5-6 under first-year coach Jason Brotherton.

Parkway (10-1) will travel to Baton Rouge to face No. 20 Central (7-4) in the second round. Central defeated No. 13 Live Oak 17-0 in the first round.

Benton (9-2) will travel to No. 7 Rayne, a 48-17 winner over No. 26 Lakeshore, in the second round.

Plain Dealing (5-6) will travel to No. 4 Oberlin (8-2) in the second round. Oberlin defeated No. 29 North Central 43-0.
