High school girls basketball: Haughton advances in Jack Clayton Invitational; Bossier, Benton win

The Haughton Lady Bucs advanced to the semifinals of the Jack Clayton Invitational with a 49-35 victory over the Lakeside Lady Warriors Thursday night at Haughton.

Haughton (2-4) faces North DeSoto at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Lady Griffins (5-1) defeated Northwood 58-48 in the first round.

In first-round games at BPCC, Captain Shreve downed Ruston 55-42 and Minden dropped West Ouachita 52-31. The Lady Gators (5-2) and Lady Tiders (6-1) face off at 5:30 Friday at Haughton in the other semifinal.

Haughton jumped out to a 12-0 lead against Lakeside (2-4), coached by former Benton assistant Lyndzee Greene McConathy. After that it was a pretty even game, but the Lady Bucs remained comfortably ahead the rest of game.

Champagne Dennis paced Haughton with 14 points. Mary Gladney added 11, Mayghan Myers 10 and Takaiya Sweeney nine.

Jhasmine Lewis topped Lakeside (2-4) with 14 points.

Both consolation semifinal games are 4 p.m. Friday Lakeside plays Northwood at BPCC, and West Ouachita takes on Ruston at Haughton.

The championship game is 1 p.m. Saturday at Haughton.

Host Bossier knocked off West Monroe 41-32 in the Bossier Lady Kats Invitational to improve to 5-3.

All three Bossier Parish teams in the event are in action today. Plain Dealing faces Green Oaks at 5, Huntington takes on Parkway at 6:15 and Bossier plays Southwood at 7.

Elsehwere, the Benton Lady Tigers opened play in the St. Michael the Archangel tournament in Baton Rouge with a 33-23 win over Episcopal.

Emily Ward scored eight of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter. Qua Chambers added eight points and Abbie Wynn six.
