High school girls basketball: Haughton reaches 20 wins; Newton, Douglas lead Plain Dealing past North DeSoto

The Haughton Lady Bucs and Plain Dealing Lady Lions won non-district games Tuesday night.

Haughton routed Florien 62-26 at Haughton, and Plain Dealing defeated North DeSoto 61-56 in Stonewall.

At Haughton, Skylar Branch scored 15 of her 22 points in the first quarter as the Lady Bucs rolled to a 31-6 lead. Haughton extended the lead to 43-7 at the half.

Shaniya Perkins scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half. 

Haughton (20-2) opens District 1-5A play Friday at Natchitoches Central (18-1), which has won 16 in a row.

At North DeSoto, Brianna Newton and Jakayla Douglas combined for 57 points in Plain Dealing’s victory. Newton scored 28 and Douglas 27.

Newton sank three 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the first half. Douglas scored 10 but the Lady Lions trailed 26-25.

Newton hit two more 3s and scored 10 in the third quarter. Plain Dealing led 39-37 going into the fourth.

After scoring just two in the third, Douglas scored 15 in the fourth. She was 7-of-10 from the free throw line.

Newton knocked down her sixth 3-pointer of the game and was 4-of-4 from the line in the quarter.

Plain Dealing (8-10) hosts Byrd Wednesday.
