High school girls basketball: Three parish teams look to advance to quarterfinals Monday


Three parish teams will seek spots in the quarterfinals of the playoffs Monday, and they’ll have to win second-round games on the road to get there.

The Airline Lady Vikings and Plain Dealing Lady Lions face the challenge of going against the No. 1 seed in their respective classes.

In Class 5A, No. 16 seed Airline (23-12) is at Walker (30-1) at 5:30 p.m. In Class 1A, No. 16 Plain Dealing (11-17) visits Northwood-Lena (30-1) at 6.

Parkway (30-2), the No. 2 seed in 5A, is at No. 18 Zachary (20-12) at 6.

Airline routed No. 17 H.L. Bourgeois 86-59 in the first round. Walker defeated Airline’s District 1-5A foe Natchitoches Central, the No. 32 seed, 73-36.

Walker’s lone loss was to St. Louis Catholic 61-48 on Jan. 7. The District 4-5A champion Lady Wildcats have reeled off nine straight wins since then. Their closest game in that stretch was a 55-49 victory over Brusly on Jan. 17.

Parkway will take a 25-game on-court winning streak into Zachary. The Lady Panthers had to forfeit a tournament game against Walker on Dec. 17 because of COVID-19-related issues,

Parkway rolled past No. 31 Acadiana 61-15 in the first round. Zachary defeated No. 15 Southside 69-40.

Zachary has won nine of its last 11. The losses were to Scotlandville 60-37 and Walker 53-31. The latter was the Lady Broncos’ lone district loss.

Plain Dealing defeated No. 17 Haynesville, a District 1-1A rival, 47-36 in the first round. Northwood-Lena received a first-round bye.

Northwood’s only loss was to Lakeview 64-56 on Dec. 3. The Lady Gators’ have won 23 in a row since then.
