High school girls track and field: Benton captures Viking Relays

Led by juniors Jamie Willis and Isabelle Russell, the Benton Lady Tigers won the Airline Viking Relays Thursday at Airline.

Benton scored 114 points. Airline and Marshall, Texas, tied for second with 69.

The meet was shortened slightly by the lightning and rain, which wiped out the final event  (4X400-meter relay).

Willis swept the hurdles, winning the 100 meters in 15.30 seconds and the 300 in 49.22. Haughton freshman Kinsley Brotherton finished runner-up in both events, running a 17.06 in the 100 and 53.55 in the 300.

Willis also finished second in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 10 inches. North Webster’s Peyten Ware won with a 17-3 1/2.

Russell won the 800 in 2:36.32 and the 1,600 in 5:47.99. Loyola’s Erin Marshall was second in the 800 in 2:39.85. Glenbrook’s Mattison Fowler finished second in the 1,600 in 6:20.97.

Benton senior Jada Stewart was the only other winner from a parish school. She won the triple jump with a 31-10 1/2. Natchitoches Central’s Tatianna Moses was second with a 31-5 3/4.

Benton’s Emmalyn Burns was runner-up in the 1,600 in 14.33.89. Loyola’s Aidan Heard won in 13:36.07.

Benton’s Erykah Pepp finished second in the 400 in 1:03.23. She was less than a second behind Natchitoches Central’s Molly Coleman, who ran a 1:02.36.

Benton’s Sadie Hamby was second in the discus with a throw of 111-4. Marshall’s Tierranni Johnson won with a 134-4.

Airline’s Arianna Hill finished second in the high jump with a 5-4, just one inch lower than Olivia Simmons of Hallsville, Texas.

Airline’s Jessie Frank took second in the pole vault with an 8-0. North Webster’s Ware won with a 10-6.

The Airline foursome of Brianna Taylor, Janiyah Boudreaux, Zamiyah Kitchen and Jaycie Wallace placed second in the 4X200 relay in 1:48.17. Marshall won in 1:46.73.

Third-place finishers in individual events from parish schools were Airline’s Kayla Daux (1,600, 300 hurdles), Airline’s Boudreaux (100 hurdles), Haughton’s Lauren Tippet (400), Airline’s Wallace (200), Airline’s Brynn Gines (3,200), Parkway’s Mikaylah Williams (shot put, discus) and Benton’s Addyson Hulett (pole vault).
