High school girls track and field: Benton runner-up in 1-5A meet

The Benton Lady Tigers finished runner-up in the District 1-5A meet Thursday at Tiger Stadium.

Benton scored 105 points. Byrd won with 114. Huntington was third with 93, Parkway fourth with 79, Captain Shreve fifth with 56 and Haughton sixth with 51.

The top four individuals and relay teams in each event qualified for the Region I-5A meet next Wednesday at Northwestern State.

Benton’s Ryleigh McCoy and Brynan Huffman and Airline’s Shelby Ledet won individual events.

McCoy continued her dominance in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet. Her teammate Isabella Joyner was second with a 9-0.

Huffman took the javelin with a throw of 97-8. Her teammate Tenley Hesson was a close second with a 97-6.

Ledet continued her outstanding season in the high jump, clearing 5-6. Captain Shreve’s Leah Bryant was second with a 5-4.

Five other athletes from parish schools posted runner-up finishes in individual events.

Airline’s Ke’Zyriah Sykes ran a 12.13 in the 100. Huntington’s Zykereya Duncan won in 11.85.

Parkway’s Zara Baker-Scanlon ran a 59.07 in the 400. Byrd’s Hayla Demery won in 58.04.

Benton’s Claire Allen ran a 12:20.38 in the 3,200. Byrd’s Emmy Banker won in 12:15.04.

Parkway’s Zaniyah Carter’s distance in the shot put was 111-7. Captain Shreve’s  Kaylanii Proby won with a 119-8.

Haughton’s Aliyah Delaney’s distance in the shot put was 33-0. Proby won with a 35-8.5.

The Airline foursome of Leah Menard, Symauri Butler, Jayda Chisley and Caely Upshaw finished second in the 4X200 relay in 1:43.66. Huntington won in 1:41.62.

Third-place finishers from parish schools in individual events were Parkway’s Destinee Lacour (400, 1:00.25), Parkway’s Sofia Bright (800, 2:32.41), Benton’s Allen (1,600, 5:48.76), Benton’s Aubrey Moscato (300 hurdles, 49.23), Parkway’s London Farhood (high jump, 5-0), Benton’s Madison Thompson (triple jump, 34-2), Airline’s Kaylyn Thompson (pole vault, 8-0), Benton’s Tameara Player (discus, 96-11.5; shot put, 32-6.5) and Parkway’s Lecsi Hilton (javelin, 91-6.5).

The Benton and Airline 4X800 teams qualified for the regional meet. The Benton team of Aaliyah Gonzalez, Emerie Tanner, Kelsey Smeckert and Chloe Smeckert finished third. The Airline foursome of Sarah Tauzin, Kaylyn Thompson, Kaniya Brown and Jennifer Nguyen was fourth.

The Benton foursome of Jaliyah Player, Dominique Coore, Ava Peters and A’Nyah Ashley finished fourth in the 4X200.

The Airline foursome of Butler, Chisley, Upshaw and Thompson was third in the 4X400.

Fourth-place regional qualifiers from parish schools in individual events were Airline’s Menard (200), Airline’s Thompson (800), Parkway’s Caylee Weaver (1,600), Benton’s Ellie Allen (3,200), Airline’s Sykes (100 hurdles), Haughton’s Skylar Hogan (300 hurdles), Benton’s Layla Davidson (high jump), Airline’s Chisley (long jump), Airline’s MiKaylin Jones (javelin) and Airline’s Addison McDowell (shot put).
