High school golf: Benton wins District 1-II title; Airline qualifies for regionals

Three-time defending Division II state champion Benton repeated as District 1 champion Monday at Chennault Park golf course in Monroe.

Freshman Hayden White shot a 1-under 71 to take medalist honors and lead the Tigers to the team title by 32 strokes over Neville. Ruston was third at 337 and West Ouachita fourth at 340.

Benton senior Jacob Wyatt finished runner-up with a 76. Seniors Shane Cram and Corbin Cantrell tied for third at 78. David Cole fired an 81.

Benton will try to defend its regional title next Wednesday at Links on the Bayou in Alexandria.

Elswehre, the Airline Vikings finished fourth in the District 1, Division I golf tournament Monday at Huntington Park Golf Course.

The Vikings shot a 324. Byrd won with a 291 followed by Barbe (311) and West Monroe (314).

Airline’s Matt Barker finished in a four-way tie for third with a 2-over 74. Byrd’s Phillip Barbaree won with a 7-under 65.

By finishing fourth, the Vikings qualified for the Region I tournament at Oak Wing Golf Club on Monday in Alexandria.
