High school softball: Airline drops two close games in St. Amant tournament; Benton, Parkway fall

Friday was a tough day for parish teams.

Airline lost two close games in the St. Amant tournament. The Lady Vikings fell to Destrehan 6-5 and defending non-select Division I state champion St. Amant 9-7.

Benton had is eight-game winning streak snapped in the Quitman tournament. The Lady Tigers lost to defending non-select Division V state champion Quitman 7-1.

In a non-tournament game, Parkway fell to Zwolle 5-4 at Zwolle.

Airline scored two runs in the top of the second to send the game against Destrehan into extra innings tied at 5. But the Lady Wildcats won it with a run in the bottom of the eighth.

Emily Rachal went 2-for-4 with a double. Alena Duran and Madalynn Shortridge also went 2-for-4.

Destrehan improved to 11-4.

Airline took a 6-3 lead against St. Amant with five runs in the top of the third. But the Lady Gators scored two in the bottom of the inning then added three in the fourth. 

The Lady Vikings cut the lead to one on Haley Whiteside’s leadoff home run in the top of the sixth. St. Amant answered with one in the bottom of the inning.

Rachal went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Ainsley Jones had a double.

Airline (7-3) is scheduled to visit Zwolle Monday at 5:30. St. Amant improved to 11-4.

At Quitman, Benton got four hits off LSU signee Cali Deal, who struck out 15 and walked one.

Emersyn Disotell went 2-for-3. Ashley Promes and Dylan Defee had singles.

Benton (10-2) is scheduled to continue District 1-5A play against Parkway Tuesday at 6 at home. Quitman improved to 7-1.

At Parkway, Zwolle scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. The Lady Panthers scored three in the sixth but the rally fell short.

Zoey Horn went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Dakota Howard went 2-for-3. Madison Menard went 2-for-4 with a double.

Macee Thompson scattered six hits in six innings. She struck out three and walked one.

Parkway dropped to 6-5. Zwolle improved to 10-5.
