High school softball: Airline gives new head coach Gregg first win

The Airline Lady Vikings gave new head coach Brittany Gregg her first victory Thursday.

Raelin Chaffin pitched a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts in a 5-0 home victory over Ruston. Airline, a Class 5A semifinalist last year, bounced back from a season-opening loss to West Monroe on Monday.

Lexi Gray had two doubles. Hanna Heng went 2-for-2 with a triple. Meaux Carroll had two hits. Jessica Grubbs had a double.

Elsewhere, Benton evened its record at 1-1 with a 9-3 victory over Byrd at home.

Sophia Livers went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBI.

Megan Risher went 2-for-4 with a double and triple. Olivia Oliphint had a home run and two RBI.

Madison Wells, who gave up one earned run, got the win.

Benton is playing in the North DeSoto tournament Friday and Saturday. Parkway is playing in the Northwood tournament.

Haughton is also in the Northwood tournament, which is being played at several sites.

The Lady Bucs face North Webster at 6 p.m. Friday at Southwood. Saturday, Haughton faces Castor at 10 a.m. at Captain Shreve and Winnfield at 2 at Southwood.
