High school softball: Airline, Haughton pick up tournament wins


The Airline Lady Vikings and Haughton Lady Bucs posted victories in the Ouachita Parish tournament on Saturday.

Airline defeated Ouachita Christian 17-6, and Haughton downed Weston 11-7.

Benton lost a couple of one-run games. The Lady Tigers fell just short of upsetting 2016 Class 5A semifinalist and undefeated Ouachita Parish, falling 11-10 after rallying with four runs in the seventh inning. Benton also lost to Sterlington 5-4 in a game shortened to four innings because of rain.

Caroline Easom went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI in Airline’s win over OCS. Kourtnee White went 4-for-4 with two RBI.

Maddie Ennis had three hits, including a double, and two RBI. Jessica Grubbs had two hits and two RBI. She also pitched six innings.

Patty Pettway and Lexi Gray had two hits each. Hannah Hutson had a double.

Airline and West Ouachita were tied at 2 in the second inning when the game was called because of rain. Ennis hit a two-run homer in the first.

The Lady Vikings (10-4) host Parkway in District 1-5A game on Tuesday. Airline leads the district at 5-0.

McKayla Burkart went 4-for-4 with a triple and two RBI in Haughton’s win over Weston.

Savannah Salley went 3-for-4 with a double. Pitcher Leah Hopson had two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Shelby Hensley went 2-for-3 with a double. Hannah Borah had a double and two RBI.

Sidney Arnold and Reanne Crumpler had one double each.

Haughton also lost to University 12-5 Saturday. Hensley hit a home run and doubled. Borah went 2-for-4. Burkart had a double.

Haughton (6-9) hosts North Webster in a non-district game Monday and faces Southwood in a District 1-5A game at home Tuesday.

Hallie Saintignan went 4-for-5 with a double in Benton’s loss to Ouachita Parish, which improved to 16-0.

Sarah Koeppen had two hits, including a double, and three RBI. Abby Kent had two hits, including a double, and four RBI. Anna Claire Kratzer and Brittany Ulmer had two hits each.

Kaylo Vo had a solid performance on the mound in relief, allowing five hits in five innings.

Kratzer had an RBI-double against Sterlington. Makenzie Chaffin, Taylor Jones, Kent and Macey Bridges had hits.

Benton (6-8) visits two-time defending state champion North DeSoto (12-2) in a District 1-4A game Tuesday.

Bossier lost to Booker T. Washington 13-12 at BTW. Haley Femia and Marraina Howard had two hits each. Mikayla Miller and Chaye Granger had doubles.
