High school softball: Airline, Parkway, Haughton enjoy success in tournaments

The Airline Lady Vikings, Parkway Lady Panthers and Haughton Lady Bucs all went 2-0 in softball tournaments on Saturday.

Airline defeated four-time defending Class B state champion Florien 8-1 and Benton 14-7 in a tournament hosted by Airline and North DeSoto.

Parkway improved to 5-0 with victories over Benton, 3-2, and St. Frederick, 12-8, in the Airline-North DeSoto tournament.

Haughton picked up its first two wins of the season in the Southwood-Northwood tournament, defeating Ruston 8-7 and Beau Chene 9-3.

Airline’s Maddie Ennis, the co-MVP on last year’s All-Parish team, went 5-for-5 with a double against Benton, according to statistics on the team’s official GameChanger account.

Jessica Baffuto had three hits, including two doubles, and three RBI. Kourtnee White had a triple, double and four RBI. Megan Clinton had two hits, and Lexi Grey had a double and two RBI. Caroline Easom also had a double.

Hannah Hutson struck out eight.

According to statistics on Benton’s official GameChanger account, the Lady Tigers’ Hallie Saintignan went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Makenzie Chaffin also had three hits, including a double, and an RBI.

Sarah Koeppen and Abby Kent had two hits each. Koeppen, the co-MVP with Ennis on the 2016 All-Parish team, has had to shoulder the entire pitching load through the Lady Tigers’ first five games. All-Parish pitcher Ashley Hunter suffered a knee injury in Benton’s season opener.

Olivia Oliphint had a double.

Hutson pitched a three-hitter with seven strikeouts in the win over Florien. She also had a double.

Easom went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Baffuto had two hits, including a double, and four RBI. Jessica Grubbs and Tori Ligman had two hits each.

Airline (4-1), which has won four straight, hosts Haughton (2-4) in a District 1-5A game Tuesday.

Parkway scored all three of its runs against Benton in the top of the sixth, rallying from a 2-0 deficit.

Shelby Newman and Lauren Jones led off the inning with singles. Skylar Bernard advanced them with a sacrifice bunt.

Newman scored on Faith Ingles’ groundout. With runners at second and third and two out, Maecy Ingram singled to right field, making it 3-2.

Ingram went 2-for-4. Madelyn Elliott and Ingles also had two hits. Allie Hunt struck out eight for the win.

Benton’s Kent went 2-for-3 with a double. Macey Bridges also had two hits. Chaffin, Saintignan and Koeppen all had doubles.

Ingram went 3-for-3 with two RBI against St. Frederick. Elliott went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Hunt had two hits. Pitcher Abbie Norcross and Shelby Newman had two RBI each.

Benton (3-2) visits Captain Shreve in a non-district game Monday. Parkway hosts Shreve in a District 1-5A game Tuesday.

Haughton took an 8-2 lead into the seventh inning against Ruston and then held off the Lady Bearcats. The Lady Bucs avenged a 15-0 season-opening loss to Ruston.

Lacey Dodson went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Shelby Hensley had a grand slam home run in the third inning. She also had an RBI single.

Savannah Salley, McKayla Burkhart and pitcher Leah Hopson all had doubles. Salley had two RBI.

Dodson had two doubles against Beau Chene. Salley went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Sidney Arnold had a two-run double in Haughton’s five-run fourth inning. She finished with three RBI.
