The Airline Lady Vikings and Parkway Lady Panthers opened District 1-5A softball play with victories Thursday night.
Airline edged defending champion Evangel Christian 2-1 at Evangel, and Parkway blanked Southwood 4-0 at Parkway.
In a non-district game between Bossier Parish foes, Benton downed Haughton 8-1 at Benton.
Hannah Hutson pitched a four-hitter and didn’t allow an earned run in Airline’s victory.
Freshman Caroline Easom went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Maddie Ennis, the co-MVP on last season’s All-Parish team, went 2-for-4 with a double. Sophomore Jessica Baffuto went 2-for-4.
Freshman Jessica Grubbs had an RBI.
The Lady Vikings (1-1) scored both runs in the fifth.
Baffuto started things off with a one-out single. She advanced to second on Kourtnee White’s sacrifice bunt. Easom brought Baffuto home with a line drive to center field.
Ennis followed that with a line drive to the same area, advancing Easom to second. Grubbs made it three consecutive singles, bringing home Easom.
An error helped the Lady Eagles get within one in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. But Hutson got a flyout to end the game.
Last season, Airline finished one game behind Evangel in the 1-5A standings.
At Parkway, Allie Hunt pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts in the Lady Panthers’ victory.
Abbie Norcross went 2-for-3. Maecy Ingram had a double. Faith Ingles and Shelby Newman had one RBI each.
The Lady Panthers (2-0) only had five hits, but they took advantage of numerous Southwood errors. The Lady Cowboys got a solid performance on the mound from Amberlyn Walsworth.
At Benton, Abby Kent went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI in the Lady Tigers’ win. Hallie Saintignan went 2-for-3 with a home run, double and two RBI. Makenzie Chaffin had two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Taylor Jones had one RBI.
Sarah Koeppen, the co-MVP on last year’s All-Parish team, scattered six hits and also had a double.
The Lady Tigers (2-0) were without All-Parish pitcher Ashley Hunter, who suffered suffered a dislocated knee on a slide home in Tuesday’s season-opening victory at Byrd. Benton coach Michelle Owens said Hunter is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Friday.
Haughton’s Lacey Dodson went 2-for-2 with a home run. Sidney Arnold had two hits, including a double. Shelby Hensley struck out five while allowing seven hits.
Airline is hosting a tournament with North DeSoto Friday and Saturday. Benton and Parkway are competing.
Haughton is competing in a tournament hosted by Southwood and Northwood.
