High school softball: Benton, Airline notch two wins each in Calvary Baptist tournament


The Benton Lady Tigers and Airline Lady Vikings picked up victories Saturday on the final day of the Calvary Baptist tournament.

Benton defeated Jena 22-7 and Calvary Baptist 5-3 in eight innings. Airline downed Ruston 16-2 and Jena 13-6.

Parkway fell to Quitman 16-6 and Winnfield 5-0 in the Quitman tournament.

Benton took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh against Calvary. The Lady Cavs scored two in the bottom of the inning to tie it.

The Lady Tigers then scored twice in the top of the eighth.

Marissa Schoth singled with one out. Macie Leeper’s double scored courtesy runner Dylan Defee, who had advanced to second on a passed ball. It was Leeper’s only plate appearance of the game.

Kennedy LaPierre then smacked a two-out double. Izzy Vincent, who subbed for Leeper, scored.

Ava Defee then set the Lady Cavs down in order in the bottom of the inning on a strikeout and two flyouts.

Defee went the distance. She allowed five hits, walked seven and struck out six. It was her second win over Calvary this season.

Schoth, Meaux Carroll and Emersyn Disotell had two hits apiece. One of Disotell’s was a double.

Carroll, Stephens, Schoth and Olivia Burns all had two hits against Jena.

Burns hit a three-run home run and had five RBI. Carroll had a double and three RBI. Schoth had two RBI.

Tayler Gonzalez smacked a grand slam home run in the fourth, giving the Lady Tigers a 15-5 lead. Sophia Livers hit a two-run home run.

Megan Risher and Leeper had doubles. Burns was the winning pitcher.

Benton (12-6) is scheduled to complete its suspended game against Haughton at Benton Monday. Haughton leads 7-5 in the top of the eighth.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to host Southwood Tuesday.

Airline’s Jina Baffuto went 3-for-3 with two doubles against Ruston.

Paige Marshall went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Paris Endris and Emily Rachal had two RBI each. Elena Heng went 1-for-1.

Aleena Duran got the win.

Baffuto went 4-for-4 with two home runs, a double and six RBI against Jena. That made the Louisiana Tech signee 7-of-7 for the day.

Endris, also a Tech signee, went 4-for-4 with a home run, double and two RBI. Natalie Sutton went 3-for-4 with a double. Marshall and Duran had one RBI each.

Rachal was the winning pitcher.

Airline (14-6) is scheduled to host West Ouachita Monday and Byrd Tuesday.

Parkway (6-9) is scheduled to visit Ruston Monday and host Natchitoches Central Tuesday.
