High school softball: Big sixth inning lifts Haughton past Airline in 1-5A opener; Defee, Livers help Benton down Stanley


The Haughton Lady Bucs scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to rally past the Airline Lady Vikings 10-6 in a District 1-5A opener at Airline Thursday.

In a non-district game, the Benton Lady Tigers shut out Stanley 2-0 at Stanley.

At Airline, Ariana Mathews led off Haughton’s half of the sixth with a home run. 

Sara White, Ella Vickers, Kylie Small, Averi Phillips and Chloe Stanfield had singles in the inning. Laney Dobrow had a double.

Brooklynn Bockhaus’ two-out, two-run home run capped the scoring.

Dobrow and White both went 2-for-4. Stanfield, Phillips and Kayleigh Goss had two RBI apiece.

Dixie Williams pitched the first three innings. Macey Schut pitched the final four.

Haughton improved to 2-5 with three one-run losses.

Louisiana Tech signee Jina Baffuto led Airline (4-2), going 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Paige Marshall went 2-for-4 with a home run. The Lady Vikings had nine hits.

Haughton and Airline are playing in the Alexandria tournament Friday and Saturday.

At Stanley, Ava Defee pitched a four-hit gem with nine strikeouts and no walks as Benton handed the Lady Panthers their first loss.

Sophia Livers went 2-for-3 with a home run and double.

Piper Stephens went 2-for-3. Christina Gegg hit a solo home run.

Benton (5-1) is scheduled to play in the Ruston tournament Friday and Saturday.
