High school softball: Haughton edges Parkway; Airline, Benton post district wins

The Haughton Lady Bucs scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to defeat the Parkway Lady Panthers 4-2 in District 1-5A softball action Thursday at Parkway.

Elsewhere, the Airline Lady Vikings remained undefeated in District 1-5A with a 14-1 rout of Byrd in five innings.

The Benton Lady Tigers crushed Northwood 15-0 in four innings in their District 1-4A opener at Benton.

At Parkway, the Lady Bucs and Lady Panthers completed seven innings tied at 2.

Hannah Borah got things going for Haughton in the eighth with a one-out walk. She scored on Shelby Hensley’s double to center field.

Sidney Arnold followed that with a single, scoring Hensley for the 4-2 lead.

Faith Ingles led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and moved to second on Allie Hunt’s sacrifice bunt.

But Haughton pitcher Leah Hopson got a popup and flyout to end the game.

The Lady Bucs took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, scoring both runs with two outs.

Leadoff batter Courtney Garrett reached second on an error. She advanced to third on Lauren Edwards’ sacrifice bunt and scored on a Dodson single.

Dodson advanced to second on McKayla Burkart’s single, stole third and scored on a passed ball.

Parkway tied it with runs in the third and fourth.

The Lady Panthers loaded the bases with three walks in the third. Maecy Ingram scored on an errant pitch.

Hopson entered the game and got Haughton out of the bases-loaded jam with a strikeout and groundout.

The Lady Panthers took advantage of a couple of errors and a walk to tie it in the fourth.

Dodson led Haughton (5-7, 2-1) at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double. Hopson allowed just four hits in 5 2/3 innings of relief. She struck out six and walked only one.

Ingles had two hits for Parkway (8-3, 2-2). Lauren Jones had a double. Hunt turned in a solid pitching performance, scattering six hits and allowed just two earned runs. She struck out 12.

At Byrd, Maddie Ennis and Jessica Baffuto had three hits each in Airline’s victory.

Ennis went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI. Baffuto also went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

Hannah Hutson had two hits, including a double, and three RBI. Caroline Easom had a double and two RBI. Lexi Gray had a double.

Jessica Grubbs allowed four hits in five innings and struck out four.

The Lady Vikings improved to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in 1-5A. Airline closes the first half of district play at home Tuesday against Parkway.

At Benton, ULL signee Sarah Koeppen had outstanding performances at the plate and on the mound in the Lady Tigers’ win over Northwood.

She pitched a four-inning one-hitter with six strikeouts. She also went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles and six RBI.

Makenzie Chaffin went 3-for-4. Taylor Jones had a double. Brittany Ulmer and Olivia Oliphint had two RBI each.

Benton improved to 6-5.
